Literary Club

Led by noted Jewish educator, Mira Sennett and hosted by Susan Katz, our book club meets three times this year to discuss these Jewish novels:

  • November 9: Sholem Aleichem's Tevye the Dairyman
  • March 8: A.B. Yehoshua's Mr. Mani
  • June 14: Joseph Epstein's Fabulous Small Jews

Discussions are held on Tuesdays at 7:30 pm.  RSVP to the JCB Office if you will be attending.

Sholem Aleichem is one of the giants of Yiddish literature.  His story, Tevye the Dairyman, forms the basis for the Broadway show, "Fiddler on the Roof."  It is interesting and telling to read the author's orignal story and re-discover his intent.  His story tells a far different tale than the well-known play.

A.B. Yehoshua is considered one of the great writers of modern day Israel.  His books, including his most recent Friendly Fire, A Woman in Jerusalem and A Liberated Bride, have all received widespread acclaim.  Mr. Mani retraces the story of the Mani family and through them, the Jewish people.  This novel was the winner of the first Israeli Literature Prize.

Fabulous Small Jews is a collection of short stories by the noted writer Joseph Epstein.  In these stories Epstein explores the question of what makes us Jewish.  Is it a matter of birth or is it determined by our outlook and approach to life?
